Manpower In Moscow

U.S.-based human resources firm Manpower International Inc. announced its entry into the Russian market Thursday at an evening presentation characterized by high security and tight-lipped company officials.

"We are making a long-term commitment to the Russian market, the Russian economy and our representative office," said Manpower CEO Jon Chait, in Moscow for the gala opening at the Russian Chamber of Commerce. "We'd like to let the government know that we're here for assistance and to provide advice wherever we can."

Manpower, with annual international revenues of some $5 billion, enjoys large government contracts in the United States, England and France.

A cordon of five armed security guards kept Russian reporters at a distance from Chait. "We don't do business this way in Paris," said another Manpower official. "But we have put over a year into understanding the Russian way of business."
