Malaysia Defends MiGs

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia has denied a purchase of 18 MiG-29 fighters was part of a Russian dumping of surplus defense equipment. The New Sunday Times quoted Defense Minister Najib Abdul Razak as saying the decision to buy the fighters was made after a thorough aircraft evaluation and tough negotiations which began two years ago. Malaysia signed last week the deal to buy the fighters for $550 million, about 20 percent of which will be paid in palm oil.
