LONDON () -- Britain's Sports Council said it hoped a new national lottery would provide it over five years with ?1.6 billion pounds ($2.6 billion) to spend on facilities from village cricket greens to national stadiums.
Britain's first national lottery since 1826 kicks off Monday and sport is one of the five "good causes" to benefit. Applications have poured in from sports bodies anxious to catch up with other countries which use lottery money to fund sports.
