Legislators Frozen Out

TBILISI () -- Shivering Georgian legislators had to adjourn Thursday after the temperature in their unheated parliament building fell to 9 degrees Celsius.

"You can't be sitting in such cold, much less hold any debates," said Irakly Tsereteli, the leader of the National Independence Party.

Georgia has suffered a sharp energy shortage, and neither apartments nor administrative buildings have received heat during the past two years.

Georgia relies on natural gas from Turkmenistan as its main source of energy. Last month, the former Soviet Central Asian republic cut all supplies over Georgia's $500 million debt.
