Latvia Eyes EU

STOCKHOLM () -- Latvian Prime Minister Maris Gailis said Tuesday he expected exploratory membership talks with the European Union to start in mid-December.

The talks would be the first formal discussion of Latvia's bid for an associate membership agreement, which it is seeking along with fellow Baltic countries Estonia and Lithuania.

"We will start negotiations around Dec. 12 and hope to be able to sign (an associate agreement) within two to three months," Gailis told a news conference during a visit to Stockholm.
