Last Boat Reaches Port

SOUTHAMPTON, England -- Heineken, the all-female entry in the Whitbread round-the-world race, became the last boat to cross the finish line, to a raucous homecoming. A long ordeal ended at midnight Wednesday for the crew on Heineken, who struggled to finish leg six from Fort Lauderdale due to a succession of rudder failures which at one time left them drifting in high seas with no steering. After nine months and 32,000 miles at sea, Heineken's plight was a cruel reminder of how testing the Whitbread race has been for the 14 boats taking part.
