Kyrgyzstan: New Note

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan () -- Kyrgyzstan will introduce a 50 som ($4) bank note next week, the largest denomination since the currency was created in May 1993, Itar-Tass reported Tuesday.

The Kyrgyz National Bank reported that demand for the new bank note does not stem from inflation, which officials say is being held at 4 percent, but from excessive physical wear on the existing currency.

The 50-som note will go into circulation Aug. 29 and bear the portrait of Kurmandzhan Datki, a turn-of-the-century Kyrgyz stateswoman.
