Kyrgyz Farm Sell-Off

GENEVA () -- President Askar Akayev of Kyrgyzstan said the former Soviet republic will complete its handover of all state farms to private ownership next year.


"In 1995, there will be no state farms," said Akayev, who met with officials at the United Nations European headquarters. He said Kyrgyzstan had completed the first "very difficult" stage of the transition from communism to a market economy. To date, 46 percent of all state-owned property has been turned over to private hands, he added.
