Kurds Shell Each Other

ANKARA () -- At least 12 Iraqi Kurds were killed and 100 were injured when rival Kurdish forces shelled the northern Iraqi town of Arbil held by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, a PUK spokesman said Monday.

"The KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) began shelling Arbil at 9 p.m. (1900 GMT) on Saturday and continued until midday Sunday," Shazad Saib, PUK representative in Ankara said.

Clashes which subsided under a ceasefire reached on Jan.8 flared from Thursday when fighters of the KDP led by Massoud Barzani attacked PUK positions, Saib said.

The two factions together fought the troops of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein which crushed their brief revolt after Baghdad was defeated in the Gulf War in 1991.
