Kravchuk Bemoans 'Plot'

KIEV -- Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk said Friday that Communists in the former Soviet Union were plotting to push out of office the founders of the Commonwealth of Independent States. "There is a strategy of left, Communist forces. And they are not hiding this," Kravchuk told journalists. "This is a broad-based strategy to remove the people who dissolved the Soviet Union. This is proceeding step by step," he said. Kravchuk, who founded the CIS in December 1991 with President Boris Yeltsin and former Belarussian leader Stanislav Shushkevich, is facing a pre-term presidential election on June 26, only 2 1/2 years into a five-year term. Polls show that he could suffer a similar fate in the elections to that of Shushkevich, a liberal who was ousted by the Communist-dominated Belarussian parliament earlier this year.
