WASHINGTON ) -- A homeless man, shot by police as he confronted them with a knife outside the White House, was listed as critical but stable Wednesday after two operations.
Law enforcement officials were investigating Tuesday's shooting of Marcelino Corniel, who police said had chased an officer with a large knife and ignored orders to drop the weapon.
Television tape of the incident raised concerns about the police response since it did not show the man lunging at police when the shots were fired.
Authorities have vigorously defended the action.
