Kim Set to Take Reins

TOKYO () -- Itar-Tass said Monday that North Korea's uncrowned leader Kim Jong-il was poised to assume the post of Communist Party chief.


Citing informed sources close to the North Korean Embassy in Beijing, Itar-Tass said Kim, eldest son and long-designated heir of the late president Kim Il-sung, would be officially declared party general secretary on the party's 50th anniversary Tuesday.
