Kiev Probes Famine

Combined Reports
Ukrainian authorities on Monday opened a formal investigation into a Soviet-era famine that killed millions of people, part of a state drive to prove that the famine was an act of genocide.

The 1932-33 famine was engineered by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin to force peasants to give up their private plots and join collective farms. Russia opposes the term genocide and says Kiev is trying to rewrite history.
