Kazakh-Uzbek Debt

TASHKENT -- The former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan has reached an agreement with neighboring Uzbekistan to repay a $98-million gas debt with wheat, phosphorus and metals, Kazakh and Uzbek officials said Thursday.

The agreement, sealed in the Kazakh capital Almaty, said Kazakhstan would cover transport costs to Uzbekistan. One Uzbek official said by telephone his country would resume gas supplies to Kazakhstan on Thursday.

But both sides declined to say what amount of wheat would be shipped to Uzbekistan and at what price. Uzbekistan is due to pipe 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Kazakhstan this year.
