ALMATY, Kazakhstan () -- Kazakh President Nursultan Nazar-bayev on Monday met the parliamentary committee charged with drafting economic reforms to put further pressure on the legislature to pass a raft of key laws on foreign investment, investment guarantees and bankruptcy by the end of the year.
Committee members agreed to prepare final drafts of the first two bills for a final reading in parliament by the end of the year, but asked for more time to work on bankruptcy legislation and on the draft of a new civil code.
Parliament, elected in March in a vote which foreign observers criticized as fraudulent, has proved to be vocal in its opposition to key elements of Dudayev's reforms, surprising those who had expected it to be a docile rubber stamp for government policies.
