Kareem Says He Wants To Coach

PHILADELPHIA -- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar says he's interested in coaching in the National Basketball Association and would consider offers beginning next year.


The league's all-time leading scorer said Tuesday people urged him to go into coaching after Magic Johnson stepped down from an interim position with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Bob Whitsitt, the NBA's executive of the year last season, has been chosen president and general manager of the Portland Trail Blazers.


Whitsitt, 38, engineered several trades and free agent acquisitions that helped Seattle compile the best regular-season record last season at 63-19.

A federal judge Tuesday warned the NBA and its players to resolve their dispute over the highly-charged issues of a salary cap, college draft and free agency before he rules on them.


At the end of a day-long trial, U.S. District Judge Kevin Duffy told both sides they might be unhappy and called on them to resume negotiations. The judge said he would rule "promptly" after reviewing final papers to be submitted to him by noon Wednesday.
