Judge Reverses Firings

LAGOS () -- A federal high court judge has stepped into Nigeria's political crisis, temporarily reinstating oil-union leaders sacked by military ruler General Sani Abacha to end a pro-democracy strike.

Judge Mamman Kolo said leaders of the oil union,NUPENG, should remain in office until Aug. 31 when he will hear an appeal against their dismissal.

The blue-collar union went on strike nearly seven weeks ago, mainly to demand that Abacha hand power to detained millionaire businessman Moshood Abiola, widely believed to have won last year's annulled elections.
