Jews Moving West

JERUSALEM () -- More than one-third of the 800,000 Jews who left the former Soviet Union in the past five years immigrated to Western countries rather than Israel, immigration officials said.

By the end of the decade, only about half a million Jews are expected to remain in the 15 former Soviet republics, the Jewish Agency, a quasi-governmental body that brings Jewish immigrants to Israel, said on Monday.

In 1989, at the start of the emigration wave from the Soviet Union, about 2.1 million Jews lived there. Some 800,000 have since left. Of those 538,000 settled in Israel and 261,000 moved to Western countries, mainly the United States, Canada, Germany and Australia.
