Japanese Minister Quits

TOKYO () -- A Japanese cabinet minister who said Japan did "good things" during its 1910 to 1945 colonial rule of Korea resigned Monday, ensuring a summit meeting between the leaders of Japan and South Korea would go ahead this week.

The long-awaited resignation ended a major crisis between the two nations and lifted a threat to harmony at this week's APEC summit meeting of Asia-Pacific leaders.

But South Korea made clear even though the present crisis was over and the summit was back on, it was tired of offensive remarks by Japan about its colonial and World War II past.
