Italy's Premier on Brink

ROME () -- The Italian Parliament debated a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Lamberto Dini on Wednesday as judgement day approached for his government and the country edged towards early elections.

On paper Dini looks doomed. Estimates of the final vote vary slightly but most have Dini losing by a margin of between three to 10 votes, with a total 627 votes up for grabs.

But commentators have not ruled out a surprise result if there are last-minute abstentions or changes of heart.
