Italy Pension Vote

ROME () -- The government of Italian Prime Minister Lamberto Dini called a confidence vote Wednesday to try and free a key pension reform bill from a swamp of amendments and speed it into law.

Political commentators said the government faced limited risks, with most parties likely to vote in favor or abstain so as not to endanger the crucial reforms.

The pension reforms aim to cut the huge cost to the state of Italy's generous state pension system, bringing it more into line with those in the rest of Europe.
