PALERMO, Sicily -- An Italian quartet has crushed the opposition on their way to the world title in the men's 100-kilometer team time trial for amateurs.
The team of Colombo, Dario Andriotto, Gianfranco Contri and Cristian Salvato led from start to finish, beating second-place France by 2:48 minutes and third-place Germany by 3:01 minutes on Sunday at the World Cycling Championships.
The Italians were the only cyclists to complete the distance in less than two hours, as the less-than-perfect weather of the day dipped to temperatures of 30 degrees centigrade.
They clocked an unbeatable time of one hour, 57 minutes, 54.1 seconds at an average speed of 51.093 kph.
It was Italy's first medal in the championships in Sicily. Italian cyclists did not capture any gold medal in the track events, which ended Saturday night with a consecutive triumph by American sprinter Martin Nothstein.
Nothstein won the match sprint and keirin titles to become the first American man to win two world track titles in the same year.
In an earlier race Sunday, Russia beat Lithuania by 44.6 seconds to win the world title in the women's 50-kilometer team time trial.
The U.S. quartet finished third in the title run.
The Russian team of Olga Sokolova, Aleksandra Ilaliaseva, Svetlana Boubenkova and Valentina Polhanova dominated the race throughout and completed the distance in one hour, four minutes, 55.1 seconds at an average of 45.872 kph.
In other cycling news, Denmark's Jesper Skibby stormed to a win in the sixth and final stage to snatch victory in the Tour of the Netherlands cycle race on Friday.
