Italian Strike Called Off

ROME () -- Italy's trade unions called off an eight-hour general strike Thursday after lengthy talks with Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi secured a compromise deal on the country's bitterly contested 1995 budget.

The accord, hammered out in 22 hours of talks, softened the blow of pension reforms, which Berlusconi's government had made the cornerstone of a budget drawn up to cut next year's deficit by 48 trillion lire ($30 billion).
