RAFAH, Gaza Strip () -- Israeli soldiers shot dead a former Palestinian guerrilla and two members of an elite PLO unit helping him sneak across the Egyptian border into self-ruled Gaza on Wednesday, a senior PLO official said.
Palestinian Authority general secretary Tayeb Abdel-Rahim said the guerrilla was Darwish Abu Khatla, a leader of the Fatah Hawks in Rafah who fled to Libya two years ago to escape capture by Israel.
He said Israeli soldiers also killed two members of Force 17, a unit that provides bodyguards for PLO leader Yasser Arafat, who were waiting on the Palestinian side of the border to help Abu Khatla, 25, cross into Gaza.
