Israel Balks on NPT

PARIS () -- Foreign Minister Shimon Peres has made clear that Israel will again refuse to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty when it comes up for extension in Geneva in April.

"Israel has said it has no intention of introducing nuclear weapons into the Middle East ... but one must first introduce peace to the Middle East," Peres, on a two-day trip to France, said when asked by reporters if his country would sign the treaty.

International experts estimate that Israel has about 200 nuclear warheads. The Israelis have always refused to confirm or deny their nuclear capability.
