Irish Guerrillas Rally

BELFAST -- One year after pro-British guerrillas stashed their guns to give peace a chance in Northern Ireland, supporters of British rule will rally to mark the truce and urge speedy release for prisoners.

The march from Belfast's Protestant strongholds to a rally in the center of town Friday will celebrate the Oct. 13 ceasefire called by "Loyalist" extremists to match an Irish Republican Army declaration six weeks before.

Fresh murals in Protestant neighborhoods paint the armed campaign as a valiant struggle and proclaim: "Send Our Prisoners Home."

Observers see signs that a deadlock over British government demands that guerrillas start giving up their arms before they can join peace talks may soon end.
