DUBLIN () -- Ireland's main opposition Fine Gael party, sensing that a government collapse is imminent, put forward a motion of confidence Tuesday to force a vote on a crisis which has split the two-year-old coalition.
The opposition motion says that parliament is not satisfied with the way the government promoted Attorney-General Harry Whelehan or why his office took seven months to deal with an extradition warrant for a priest suspected of multiple child abuse.
The motion was made public hours before Prime Minister Albert Reynolds was due to explain the government's handling of the child-abuse case.
