Irish Allow 45 Points

NEW YORK ( -- Coming down from the press box and returning to the sideline sooner than expected gave Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz an up-close view of the Fighting Irish allowing the most points in his 10-year tenure.

Seventh-ranked Ohio State (4-0) scored three touchdowns following Irish turnovers during a 5 1/2-minute span in the third quarter, and beat No. 15 Notre Dame 45-26 Saturday in the first meeting of the schools since 1936.

Holtz, who coached Notre Dame (3-2) from the sideline for the first time since undergoing spinal surgery Sept. 12, watched as the Irish gave the ball away on three straight possessions that led to Ohio State touchdowns.

It only seems like 59 years since the Prairie View Panthers won a game. The Panthers' 64-0 loss to Grambling on Saturday was merely their 51st in a row, a college record. Not since Oct. 28, 1989 has Prairie View won. The victory was coach Eddie Robinson's 399th.

The longest current winning streak in Division I-A, the top collegiate level, ended when Wisconsin won in its first visit to State College, Pennsylvania, 17-9 over No. 6 Penn State. The Nittany Lions had won 20 in a row.
