Iraqi Defector Appears

LONDON -- The latest confidant of Saddam Hussein to defect surfaced in London on Thursday, wearing a false beard and mustache, and urged his compatriots to rise up in opposition to Iraq's president.

But Husain Rashid Hassan, billed as the former master of ceremonies in Saddam's private office, refused under repeated questioning to reveal basic details about his recent history, making his claims and their weight hard to verify.

But the former aide talked freely of weapons (Saddam made all the decisions), security (only six people were cleared to enter the inner sanctum) and the deception of UN inspectors.
