iran outlaws neckties

NICOSIA -- Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has issued a fatwa against wearing neckties and bowties. "Wearing neckties and bows is not allowed because it propagates an offensive, non-Moslem culture," Khamenei said in a brief fatwa, or ruling, printed in Tehran's Resalat newspaper Thursday. It was not immediately clear how the police would now treat men wearing ties, seen occasionally in upperclass north Tehran streets and in weddings and parties across the city.
