Injured Boxer Sues Eubank For Slander

LONDON -- Michael Watson, brain-damaged and wheelchair-bound after losing a world title fight to Chris Eubank three years ago, is suing the WBO super-middleweight champion for libel and slander.

Watson's lawyers issued a High Court writ Monday accusing Eubank of suggesting that Watson took performance-boosting drugs before their title fight in London in September 1991.

That fight left Watson, 28, with brain damage after he was knocked out in the final round. His court action, which also involves a libel action against the network London Weekend Television, refers to what Eubank is alleged to have said after the contest.

"I want him tested to see if he had anything in his blood because he was too ... he was so strong," viewers heard him say. "I want his urine tested because no one is that strong."
