Indians Scorch Twins To Complete Sweep

Dennis Martinez won his sixth straight decision and Candy Maldonado hit a tiebreaking two-run double as the host Cleveland Indians beat the Minnesota Twins 7-1 to complete a four-game sweep. Cleveland has won five straight games and is 24-4 in its last 28 games at Jacobs Field, and the Indians outscored the Twins 32-12 during the four-game set. Martinez (7-4) improved to 6-0 over 10 starts since his last loss on May 11 at New York. Dave Winfield hit his ninth homer for Minnesota's run. Red Sox 4, Angels 1. In Boston, Roger Clemens allowed two hits and struck out 10 in seven shutout innings before leaving with tightness in his right groin. The Red Sox scored all their runs in the second. Scott Cooper had a two-run double, and Damon Berryhill and John Valentin added RBI singles. Athletics 4, Yankees 0. In New York, Steve Ontiveros extended his scoreless streak to 24 1-3 innings and combined with four relievers to shut out the Yankees on four hits. Ontiveros (5-2), who had missed his last start due to a tight right groin muscle, allowed four hits over the first six 1-3 innings in winning his fourth straight decision. Orioles 9, Mariners 3. In Baltimore, Leo Gomez hit two homers and Chris Hoiles and Mark McLemore had one apiece for the Orioles. Sid Fernandez (5-4), activated off the disabled list before the game, allowed three runs and eight hits in five innings. Rangers 4, Tigers 3. In Arlington, Texas, Will Clark drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the ninth inning, giving Texas a victory over Detroit. Oddibe McDowell singled with one out in the ninth off Mike Gardiner (2-2) and went to third on Jeff Frye's double. Jose Canseco was walked intentionally to load the bases before Clark walked on four pitches. White Sox 3, Brewers 2. In Chicago, pinch-hitter Norberto Martin doubled home the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting Chicago over Milwaukee. Blue Jays 9, Royals 4. In Kansas City, Missouri, John Olerud had a two-run double and Toronto, held hitless for five innings by Bob Milacki, broke loose for five runs in the sixth to beat Kansas City. Mets 2, Giants 1, 10 innings. In the National League in San Francisco, Jim Lindeman's leadoff homer in the 10th inning gave New York the victory. Lindeman hit a 1-1 pitch directly over the wall in center field for his fourth homer of the year. It came off Rod Beck (2-4), who has yielded nine homers in 29 1-3 innings. Meanwhile former Met Darryl Strawberry, released by the Dodgers earlier this year because of drug problems, began his comeback with the Giants by stroking a single and a home run for San Francisco's triple-A affiliate in Phoenix. The troubled slugger finished 2-for-4 with a strikeout. Cubs 4, Rockies 3. In Chicago, Derrick May's line-drive single brought home the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning Monday as the host Chicago Cubs rallied to beat the Colorado Rockies 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader. The Cubs rallied for two runs in the inning against Bruce Ruffin (3-4), the Colorado closer who blew his fifth save opportunity in 18 chances. Jose Bautista (2-3) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. In the second game, Dante Bichette hit a misplayed two-run double in the top of the 15th inning to give Colorado a split with a 4-2 win. Reds 5, Marlins 1. In Miami, All-Star Jose Rijo pitched six scoreless innings and Reggie Sanders broke the game open with a two-run, eighth-inning homer, leading Cincinnati to its fourth straight victory. Astros 13, Cardinals 6. In St. Louis, Tony Eusebio had a career-high four hits and four RBIs and Andujar Cedeno also drove in four runs, helping Houston beat St. Louis. Phillies 10, Padres 4. In San Diego, light-hitting Todd Pratt hit a three-run double and a two-run homer and Philadelphia scored eight runs in the fourth inning to beat San Diego. All-Star Danny Jackson (11-2) allowed a season-high 12 hits in six innings but extended his streak of not allowing a walk to 21 innings. Expos 5, Dodgers 1. In Los Angeles, Butch Henry pitched six 2-3 scoreless innings and Larry Walker had three hits -- including his 15th homer -- as second-place Montreal moved within two games of Atlanta in the NL East race. Henry (5-1) allowed five hits, struck out three and walked two.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
