ICRC: Let Civilians Go

GENEVA () -- The International Committee of the Red Cross has called on Russia to allow the evacuation of civilians and the wounded trapped inside Grozny, the besieged Chechen capital, a spokesman said Thursday.

The Swiss-based organization also made an appeal Thursday for $43 million to cover the costs of its emergency aid operation in Chechnya.

Cornelio Sommaruga, the president of the ICRC, made the evacuation request to foreign minister Andrei Kozyrev at a meeting in Geneva two days ago and is still awaiting an answer, Jean-Marc Bornet said.
