MOSCOW () -- A fire in a home for mental patients in the Ural Mountains killed seven patients and injured 18 others, Itar-Tass reported.
The fire at the home in Kizel, 1215 kilometers northeast of Moscow, started due to a short circuit in the institution's worn out electrical system, the agency said Monday. The blaze soon spread to other parts of the building.
Fire fighters and rescue teams from coal mines in the area rushed to the scene and helped get most of the approximately 200 patients, many of whom could not move independently, to safety.
