Historic Russian Ship Sinks

AMSTERDAM -- A historic Russian sailing ship abandoned in the North Sea after becoming disabled in heavy seas has sunk, the Dutch Coast Guard said Friday.

The Holy Spirit was bound for the Amsterdam Maritime Museum for a commemoration of Tsar Peter the Great's visit to the Netherlands, where he learnt shipbuilding.

The ship's five crew took to a lifeboat Wednesday after foul weather wrecked its steering gear, leaving it adrift off the Dutch coast. A German crew member later died.

A Dutch salvage tug attached a line to the mast of the Holy Spirit, a replica of a frigate built in 1702, and began towing it to port. But the mast was torn free by high waves Thursday night and the vessel went down.
