Herzog Begins Term

BERLIN -- Roman Herzog began his term as Germany's new president Friday by saying his countrymen are allowed to love their nation but the Nazi past dictates they not get carried away. "The last thing we need are a national hullabaloo, fanfares and the clashing of cymbals," the former chief high court judge said after he was sworn in to replace Richard von Weizsaecker during a ceremony at the Reichstag, Germany's former and future parliament building. Herzog was elected as Weizsaecker's successor on March 23. Weizsaecker set a strong moral tone during his permitted 10 years in office by repeatedly calling on Germans to confront the Nazi years.
