Haiti Seeks U.S. Aid

PORT-AU-PRINCE -- Jean-Bertrand Aristide's government is seeking another helping hand from the Americans -- free access to the U.S. market to help build the Haitian economy.

The government has proposed that, for a period of 10 years, U.S. tariffs be totally lifted on all imports from Haiti and import quotas in such areas as garments be eliminated for Haitian goods.

The U.S. Embassy said the government's plan would be considered.
