ATHENS, Georgia -- Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev says a "chain of blunders'' by President Boris Yeltsin has caused the escalating violence in Chechnya.
Gorbachev said Friday that Yeltsin's failure to politically resolve Russia's dispute with the republic, and mistakes Yeltsin made during the country's 1994-96 war with Chechnya, had led to the renewed conflict. Gorbachev said he warned Yeltsin five years ago that hardline policies toward the republic would result in "a real bloodbath.''
