Global Gems, Translated

The "World Bestseller" series, published by Novosti, has established itself as a must for book lovers who want to read what is popular internationally.

The series has even surpassed in fame and popularity the thick monthly magazine "Inostrannaya Literatura" (Foreign Literature) -- a publication that was more or less obligatory reading for every "kulturny" person in this country beginning in the '60s.

Most of the books in the "World Bestseller" series were written within the last few years.

They are legally published in this country (meaning Novosti bought the copyrights); they are decently translated; they appear every second week or so, are reasonably priced and can be bought at practically any bookstore or from most booksellers.

The newest arrivals include: The Immortals by Michael Korda, Mutation by Robin Cook, I'll Be Seeing You by Mary Higgins Clark and The Client by John Grisham.

The publishers recently issued a collection of works by Sidney Sheldon printed in 12 volumes, and they have just added another four books (Phantoms, Hideaway, The Mask and Strangers) to Dean R. Koontz's 10-volume set.

Last year Novosti printed 115,000 copies of Shirley Conran's Lace in paperback, and this October 30,000 copies of Lace and Lace 2 were issued in hardback.

Another hit among Russian readers is Robert James Waller's The Bridges Of Madison County. This fall the book is on the hardback bestsellers list in both "Publishers Weekly" and "Knizhnoye Obozreniye" (Book Review).
