GIs Called Out in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti () -- U.S. soldiers and tanks Tuesday were occupying a main plaza facing army headquarters, where four Haitians died in a firefight after ex-soldiers stormed the building to demand back pay.

Last week hundreds of discharged soldiers massed at army headquarters demanding their salary and payment of pensions.

On Monday soldiers forced their way into headquarters and clashed with Haitian officers inside. During the night, the U.S. Army closed off access to army headquarters.

Thousands of people later demonstrated around the plaza, demanding the army's abolition and chanting "Aristide, president for life."
