Gingrich Backs GATT

ATLANTA, Georgia () -- President Bill Clinton has received support for the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade from an unexpected source -- one of his staunchest Republican foes.

Congressman Newt Gingrich, who is expected to be named speaker of the House of Representatives in the new Republican-dominated Congress, said at a news conference that failure to pass the GATT "would have catastrophic consequences for the American economy and the world economy, " and pledged to work with Clinton in a bipartisan effort to get the trade pact passed.

Republicans have so far withheld backing for the trade agreement.
