Ghanaian Takes Belt

LEVALLOIS-PERRET, France -- Ghana's Ike Quartey took the World Boxing Association welterweight title off Crisanto Espana when he knocked out the previously unbeaten Venezuelan in the 11th round. Espana, 29, the Northern Ireland-based fighter who had held the title since beating American Meldrick Taylor in October 1992, was cut on the cheek in the fourth round Saturday and knocked to the canvas in the fifth. Unbeaten Quartey, 24, obtained his 26th victory and first world crown with impressively strong punching. The Ghanaian waited patiently for Espana, unbeaten in 30 bouts, to make mistakes.
