Geffen Records' On-Line Song a First

NEW YORK -- In a first for both the computer and music industries, Geffen Records plans to distribute a new song by Aerosmith through a computer on-line system. The song, "Head First," will be available to CompuServe subscribers for a limited time beginning June 27. The rock group recorded the song during sessions for its most recent album, "Get a Grip," but left it off the album. Geffen and CompuServe describe the venture, to be formally announced Thursday, as an experiment. It reflects the promise of digital delivery of entertainment but also the current limitations of technology. For instance, only owners of a multimedia personal computer with stereo speakers and a large hard drive would find it practical to obtain the song. "Head First" will fill 4.3 megabytes of space on a computer hard drive. Depending on modem speed, it will take 60 to 90 minutes to download, according to CompuServe. Aerosmith is waiving royalties for the song and CompuServe will not charge for the time it takes to download it.
