Frazier Victorious in Lackluster Match

MANHATTAN BEACH, California -- The New Age of women's tennis dawned in Manhattan Beach, and it looked ... antiquated.

With styles lacking charisma, Amy Frazier and Ann Grossman pounded away from the baseline for 64 minutes Sunday in the final of the Virginia Slims of Los Angeles.

And when the points were counted, it was Frazier, 21, who had the better shots in a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

"She is a very one-dimensional player but she is very good at it," Grossman said of her childhood friend.

That much was evident during the Manhattan beach event. Frazier did not drop a set in five matches with the best performance of her career.

Martina Navratilova announced Sunday that she will not compete in the U.S. Open saying she does not feel fit enough for the two-week event.

"My 37-year-old body is telling me to play on indoor surfaces, and I think it's time to listen," Navratilova said.

In Mason, Ohio on Sunday, Michael Chang won his second consecutive ATP Championship, routing his former nemesis, Stefan Edberg, 6-2, 7-5 in a reprise of last year's final.

While Edberg was lethargic at first, Chang was relentless, winning the first 11 points and never letting Edberg back in Sunday's match.

"He's beaten me bad. He shows no mercy," Chang said. "If a guy's off that day, you take advantage of him." (LAT, Reuters, AP)
