They said Sunday that Ambartsum Galstyan was gunned down near his house Saturday night. He was shot twice at point-blank range, officials said.
The assassin fled.
Galstyan was active in the opposition to President Levon Ter-Petrosyan and in the independence movement for the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan. A bitter war for control of the enclave, which is populated mostly by ethnic Armenians, is now in its sixth year.
