YEREVAN, Armenia () -- A former Yerevan mayor active in the opposition has been assassinated, officials said in the Armenian capital.
They said Sunday that Ambartsum Galstyan was gunned down near his house Saturday night. He was shot twice at point-blank range, officials said.
The assassin fled.
Galstyan was active in the opposition to President Levon Ter-Petrosyan and in the independence movement for the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan. A bitter war for control of the enclave, which is populated mostly by ethnic Armenians, is now in its sixth year.
