BRUSSELS -- European Parliament elections got under way in four European Union countries on Thursday with the political future of at least one EU leader on the line. Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark and Ireland held elections while the other eight EU countries will vote on Sunday -- the greatest trans-national poll in history. British voters were widely expected to use the elections to express their displeasure with Prime Minister John Major's Conservative government. If Major fares as badly as some polls have predicted he is expected to face a serious leadership challenge from his party later in the year.
