EU Caps Imports

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- European Union quotas on steel imports from ex-Soviet republics will be extended to the end of the year, the EU's official journal reported Thursday. Imports of flat rolled steel products will be limited to 112,783 metric tons between July 1 and Dec. 31. Coils will make up 72,202 tons and heavy plate 25,285 tons. Imports of long steel will be capped at 52,703 tons during the same period. That includes 5,149 tons of beams and 5,270 tons of wire rods. The EU has been trying to cap exports from the ex-Soviet bloc to protect its own steel industry while it works out an industry restructuring plan.
