STRASBOURG, France () -- The European Union's assembly Wednesday overwhelmingly approved Jacques Santer, the Luxembourg prime minister, and his team of executives to run the 15-nation trading bloc for the next five years.
Despite strong criticism of some of the nominees, the 626-seat European Parliament gave its strong backing to Santer and 19 other politicians to carry out the EU's day-to-day business. The vote was 416 to 103, with 59 abstentions.
"It's an extremely comfortable result," said Santer, who will assume his new job midday Monday as president of the European Commission and its 15,000 bureaucrats
