ETA Militants Held

MADRID () -- Spanish police on the holiday island of Majorca have arrested three suspected ETA guerrillas who may have been preparing an assassination attempt against King Juan Carlos.


National police chief Angel Olivares told a news conference two of the men held were seized in an apartment they had rented some 500 meters from Marivent Palace, the Spanish royal family's holiday home just outside Palma.


The third was detained aboard a yacht moored in the port of Alcudia, in the northeast of the island.


Olivares said police seized weapons, including a sub-machine gun, a pistol, a rifle with telescopic sight, explosives and a variety of documents.


One of the suspects was named as Juan Jose Rego Vidal, 53, a long-standing ETA militant who was jailed for one year in 1979. The others were his son Inaki and Jorge Garcia Sertucha.
