Estonian Chief Resigns

TALLINN, Estonia -- An American citizen who has served for a year as commander in chief in the former Soviet republic of Estonia has tendered his resignation over a dispute with the country's prime minister. Alexander Einseln, 62, complained he had not been told by Estonian Prime Minister Mart Laar about plans to closely consult with Israel on defense matters. "The commander in chief finds it difficult to answer for the country's defense capability and security" and "understands that Prime Minister Laar does not trust him," a statement issued by Einseln's office said Thursday, adding that the commander could not operate without being kept informed on vital defense negotiations. Estonian President Lennart Meri turned down the resignation request, Interfax reported.
